Balancing the rigorous, analytical mindset of a Ph.D. scientist with the gritty, high-stakes reality of combat sports, Coach Haris leads the Boxing and MMA programs with a focus on precision, innovation, and practical application.

As a well-rounded martial artist with competitive grappling experience, Haris understands that MMA is entirely its own sport. He doesn’t just teach striking in a vacuum; he teaches striking specifically adapted for the cage, focusing on range management, cage-wall tactics, and seamlessly blending combinations with takedown defense.

A dedicated student of the game, Haris frequently travels to train and collaborate alongside top-tier professionals. Having spent time cross-training at elite, world-renowned fight camps, he brings cutting-edge techniques and modern training methodologies directly back to the students in Ames.

Combat Sports Innovator

Haris’s dedication to the sport extends far beyond coaching. He is the founder and owner of WristRides LLC, an innovative combat sports gear company. His patent-pending, reusable MMA glove cuffs were designed to protect training partners and eliminate the need for daily athletic tape. Today, WristRides are used and tested by professional fighters worldwide, reflecting his hands-on commitment to solving real problems for martial artists on a global scale.

Off the Mats

When he isn't breaking down fight film or running MMA rounds, Haris is a dedicated researcher. He holds a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from Iowa State University, where his doctoral research focused on cellular biology and immunity. The exact same discipline, systematic problem-solving, and meticulous attention to detail that drove his scientific research are what make him an exceptional, highly technical coach.
